When Representation Stops Being Enough

The Collapse of Access as a Business Model

A cultural function can end

without the institution switching off.

Access to audiences used to be scarce enough to sustain a profession: speaking for someone, booking the gate, holding the introduction.

That function is ending in the way this observatory often records endings — not as a click, but as residue.

The office can remain. Representation, as a scarce cultural act, does not have to.

  • Access / Intermediary / Residue

This is not a news article about bankruptcies, and it is not a claim that talent agencies are disappearing. It is an observation of how a cultural intermediary ends one function while remaining as another.

Core thesis

When access stops being scarce, the intermediary must become infrastructure.

SOURCE FACT

Not this

STRUCTURAL SHIFT

NOT QUITE OFF

This observatory asks when a culture treats something as over.

The access business can end while the name of the office continues.

That is not disappearance. It is residue: the institution remains after the function that justified it has thinned.

Key questions

  1. 01

What remains of an intermediary when access is no longer scarce?

  2. 02

If talent can reach audiences directly, what must an agency provide to remain valuable?

  3. 03

Does the agency disappear, or become infrastructure?

  4. 04

Which agency functions can AI absorb?

  5. 05

    What remains HUMAN RESERVED?

  6. 06

When platforms replace broadcasters as gatekeepers, who gains power?
